WaPo – Bush Order Expands Network Monitoring:
President Bush signed a directive this month that expands the intelligence community’s role in monitoring Internet traffic to protect against a rising number of attacks on federal agencies’ computer systems.
Somehow, I am not reassured by this news.
A few days ago the D.C. Circuit, in a 3-0 decision, held that the FCC could not require Comcast, or other broadband providers, to follow principles of network neutrality under their current justification.
A federal trial court in Oregon ruled that a suspect's rights were not violated when police -- tipped by a neighbor -- accessed his unprotected WiFi network and saw child pornography shared via his iTunes library.
President Obama came into office pledging greater openness, and his latest executive order seems to directly speak to that pledge -- though it will likely benefit historical investigations especially.
