"....it seems perfectly rational and even expected that believers in alternative creation stories should turn to philosophers of science in an attempt to justify the why and how of their beliefs to outsiders."
I think that it comes down to legitimation. In the Creation Museum there is an entire room and hallway devoted to admiring past scientists who they believe were creationists (Bacon, of course, but also Galileo, Boyle, Pascal, Newton, and so on). They are seeking legitimacy by connecting themselves to such strong historical and philosophical legacies and thereby evade any appearance of being a "fringe" movement. They can claim that science has fallen away from its intellectual roots and that modern philosophers of science support this.
